That’s What That Was About? 1

The wife and I stumbled across “Good Will Hunting” on television last week.  It’s one of those great movies that you don’t see for a few years and you forget how good that it really was.  Then you remember how skinny Matt Damon was, and you are shocked at the crazy hair that Casey Affleck was sporting at the time.  It’s been almost 14 years since that movie came out.  Time flies when you’re having fun.

That’s not what prompted me to get out the quill and ink today.  There was something very wild that I discovered as the credits rolled.  The bumper music for the movie as you see Will Hunting driving away to a new life is a song called “Afternoon Delight” by the Starland Vocal Band.  I’ve heard the song before, and I remember singing it in the car when I was a kid.  You hear it from time-to-time and it’s catchy and will stick with you for a couple of days.  The shocking part to me was the actual lyrics, which I am SURE I haven’t ever paid attention to before.

This is a crazy wacko song that talks about rubbing this and that.  The funny part to me was how silly I must have sounded as a 6 or 7 year old singing this at the top of my lungs in our old Pinto.  It got me thinking about the things you just don’t know when you’re a kid, and how great that really is.  My own kids love some songs on the radio today that make my wife and I cringe.  To them, they have no meaning, they are just fun songs.  There are lots of other things that childhood ignorance protects us from.  I suspect my kids will have a shorter childhood that I had, and maybe they’ll catch on to the uncomfortable lyrics of Afternoon Delight about 35 years sooner than I did.

Just in case you are wondering, here they are.  Fishing is now SOOOOOO creepy.

Afternoon Delight
The Starland Vocal Band

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto’s always been; when it’s right, it’s right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything’s a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin’ of you’s workin’ up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin’ sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin’ you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn’t bite
But you’ve got some bait a waitin’ and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin’ ‘for the sun goes down.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Repeat chorus.
